I wish that it were still in print. It finds creative language to talk about the hardships of trying to find friends when you are shy and the dangers of being manipulated by more confident children. It is one of the only children's books I can think of that uses an unreliable narrator. It also is unusual in that it deals with friendships between boys and girls and between children and the elderly. The descriptions of the main character's love for the animals in her life are very touching. I tear up in the chapters about Stilt's growing healthier and more playful. If I had the ability to bring just one of my childhood favorites back into print, I would choose this one without a doubt.
