Beautifullly illustrated "My First Signs" board book...

I bought this board book for my niece's 2nd birthday. She is neither deaf nor hard of hearing, however, she does have a slight delay in terms of verbal communication. My brother and sister-in-law have taught her a few signs, which she uses with enthusiasm. When I saw this book, I was excited because I thought it would expand on what she already knows and help her as she develops her communication skills. The book is beautifully illustrated, so colorful and really nice to look at. Each baby is pictured using a different sign and next to the picture is a brief description of what the sign is (and how to make it). The descriptions are very easy to understand. I was not aware when I bought the book that it uses British signs but that does not bother me (since my niece only uses signs to communicate with her parents and family). If she did need sign language to communicate with the rest of the world, then that fact would bother me since I'd want consistency for her. Otherwise, I think this book is a nice tool for developing babies.

Great Introduction!

I intorduced this book to my son at 9 months old and he loved it from the very beginning. He loved the illustrations and how big it was. We liked to prop the book on the couch and practice together. I understand that some of the signs might be different than ASL, but I think to argue over that is missing the point. This book is meant as an INTRODUCTION. It is meant to just get your kids to understand that they can sign as a form of communicating and its fun. My son quickly learned all the signs from this book and we have since had to move on to more advanced books. But he still loves to pull it out everyonce in a while for some reason and go back over it. I think its the illustrations. Since buying the book I have bought more books by the author and illustrator. He loves those too.

Very Cute Book!

My two year old Loves it. In just three weeks he has learned 10 signs.

Great book for infants!

I'm an occupational therapist and I absolutely loved using this book with my daughter. We used it from the age of 6 months to 17 months, when my daughter started to use more verbal language. I've read the other reviews and they state that the book is BSL, which I didn't even realize (not being a speech language pathologist, I'm not exposed to sign language as much). The book was great for what I think it's intended to be. It seems to be appropriate for infants to toddlers that are learning sign language as a precursor to verbal language. The children that would benefit from it won't communicate with other people who use standard ASL and won't use sign language as their main form of communication. My daughter learned approximately 20-25 signs to communicate to me things that she wanted and it cut down on a lot of frustration. I also noticed that if the word that she wanted to communicate wasn't in the book or wasn't something that I taught her, she would make up a sign...she even made up a sign for The Wiggles. This book is great for an infant/toddler because the pages are cardboard (they won't tear), the pictures are age appropriate for a baby, and it's easy to understand. I've seen several baby sign language books and none were appropriate to sit down and look at with a baby. This book was actually the first book that my daughter wanted to "read" before she went to bed, because she could "read" it. Again, a wonderful book for a infant/toddler who isn't going to use sign language as their main form of communication. My daughter is now 20 months old and has been talking for awhile and I really contribute it to her use of sign language prior to verbal language. Even if there's not a word that your baby wants to communicate in the book, just make it up. You're the only one that is probably going to use it with them...they won't be using the signs for long anyhow.

wow

I was surprised at how quickly my son learned to understand the signs. I wanted a book with simple illustrations that my whole family can use and it worked out great!
