A MONSTROUSLY BEAUTIFUL LOVE STORY

Several of the blurbs on the back cover of My Dead Girlfriend #1 praise the book as whimsical. Too me, whimsical seems to sell this very unique title from Tokyopop woefully short. I think there is a very strong message in the book that speaks to kids who deal with loneliness and isolation in their daily lives that goes well beyond whimsical. Finney Bleak is from a family whose claim to fame is the spectacular way in which they died. From being eaten by a great white shark, to meat grinder accidents, to being electrified in a carnival tunnel of love ride. The Bleaks sure no how to go to the great beyond. The trouble is that they seldom go to the great beyond. They just hang around the Bleak home as ghosts, usually bothering poor Finney with late night parties. Finney's world is like a Universal Horror film come to life. His school is filled with monsters such as vampires, werewolves, Frankenstein-like monsters, witches, and creatures from some lost lagoon...and they all seem to have it in for poor Finney whom, in a world of monsters, is remarkably ordinary. One day, things finally start to turn around for Finney. At the town carnival he meets the beautiful Jenny. They have a wonderful day riding rides and pigging out and even the death of Finney's parents doesn't seem to put a damper on things...after all, they are still home as ghosts now! Finney thinks things are finally looking up until he makes the discovery that beautiful, sweet Jenny just happens to be dead! Eric Wright's enjoyable tale is so very different the than typical Manga published by Tokyopop. First, it's not done in Manga style at all but more in an animated cartoon style which perfectly complements the story. Wright shows that even for the most lonely, there is always a perfect match out there for them...even if they are dead. Reviewed by Tim Janson
