4.5 stars for hellhounds!

Apart from the fact that the hellhounds referred to in the title were less central to some of the stories than I expected, this is an excellent book. The worldbuilding in all four worlds is fascinating and engaging, ranging from a sort of fantasy/sci-fi blend in Charlaine's story to urban fantasy in Ilona's, paranormal/urban fantasy in Nalini's, and paranormal in Meljean's. There's also a range of explicit sexual content, from mild to lusty, and some romance as well, although those aren't the focus of the book as a whole. In particular, this book serves as a fantastic introduction to these ladies' worlds if you aren't entirely familiar with them. It would be a great way to find a couple of new authors--or to snack on a few sweet treats by authors whose work doesn't come out often enough for your tastes! [Review book provided by publisher]

Must Love Hellhounds

Nalini Singh "Angel's Judgment" This novella is from Nalini's Guild Hunter series. It follows Sara, the director of the guild before she became director and was a hunter. Sara and the Slayer, Deacon (slayers are Guild's internal police for rogue hunters) hunt down a suspected rogue hunter who has been performing unsanctioned vampire executions. This story was fantastic! It pretty much had it all; action, suspense, delectable sexual tension, mystery and the storyline was superb! This novella was exhilarating, impressively done and complete. It got me all hyped up to read the next Guild Hunter's novel, Archangel's Kiss due out 2/10/2010. This novella turned out to be my favorite story out of this anthology. 5+/5 Ilona Andrews "Magic Mourns" This novella is from the Kate Daniel's series. It focus's on Andrea, Kate's best friend. The story seems to pick up shortly after where Magic Strike's leaves off. I've been waiting on this novella for a long time, after getting just a tease of Andrea and Raphael's budding relationship. They are both hot-headed and at times volatile. Andrea and Raphael hunt down a necromancer who has stolen the dead body of Aunt B's mate (Aunt B is Raphael's mother and also the werehyena alpha), and finally hash out their issues. Unfortunately it's not at an opportune time, since they're being chased by a hellhound. It's so refreshing to see the male and female share the alpha/beta role, as oppose to the usual were story where the female only has value because of her mate's stature. This story was exciting, complete and well done. I also look forward to reading the next book in the Kate Daniels series Magic Bleeds due out 6/2010. 5/5 Meljean Brook "Blind Spot" I haven't read Meljean's Guardian series and have been on the fence about it for some time. This novella was easy to follow even though I am not familiar with the series. Maggie, a personal body guard and a hellhound named Sir Pup, help Geoff, Maggie's employer's nephew in rescuing Geoff's sister, Katherine who has been kidnapped. After enjoying this novella tremendously, I will definitely be picking up her Guardians series. This story was interesting, exciting and smoothly done. 5/5 Charlaine Harris "Britlingens Go to Hell" I've read several short stories by Charlaine and never really enjoy her novellas, however, I did find this novella the most enjoyable of the short stories I've read in the past from her. Two body guards are hired to guard a thief through his trip through hell, to steal back one of Lucifer's valuable treasures. This story felt a bit choppy. The storyline had great potential but fell a bit short of feeling complete. 3/5 This anthology was a success in my opinion. All stories kept to the hellhound theme and had a fun, humorous feel to them. I also recommend: Angels' Blood Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, Book 1) Blood Engines (Marla Mason, Book 1) Strange Brew Unbound

A Perfect Taste of Extraordinary Worlds

I read most of these authors religiously. Andrews is a must buy for me. She could write a note about haggis on a napkin and I'll buy it. She (they) are that skilled of a writer. Through her, I've had the pleasure of getting to know Singh and Brooks. I've picked up a Harris book or three over the years and have found them good. So I grabbed at this book knowing full well there was some solid writing here. What I didn't expect was a delicious spread of stories that read like a "Taste of Five-Star Chefs". Each story presented in the book really highlights the cream of each author's writing; a delicate taste that leaves you satisfied with your mouthful but craving for me when you turn that last page. Andrews' exploration of Andrea and Raphael's relationship is a rolling, hardcore ride of sensuality and vibrant personalities. THIS is the story that I wanted to read. It can be read as a stand alone so the reader unfamiliar with the Kate Daniels' world isn't left on the side of the road in confusion but instead, pulls you in with a shot of adrenaline to the vein. And this is a small window in the explosive and fantastical world she's created in her Magic Series. Singh and Brook both deliver a solid and intriguing story. I liked Angels' Judgement and didn't feel as if I needed to read five books in order to catch up to where the story was leading me. It was clean, precise and hot. I liked the mystery of things and the twists were sublime. Brook's addition to this anthology was SO satisfying, I was left full and happy.... and feeling like I'd just eaten a home prepared meal by my favourite (wicked) cook. So damned sexy and wonderful writing. Absolutely wonderful. Harris presented a piece that hit her writing strengths and most of all, well-crafted. It was a lighter feel than her current writing but as flavourful. It features two female leads, something that is rarely seen these days and truly hits the "buddy" trope. It's very well done. Get this book. These small tastes, as presented here, make grabbing the authors' series really tempting. I encourage you to give in to your temptations.
