FBI Special Agent Julia Last very discreetly runs Lasts Resort, a safe house for injured officers and protected witnesses. She has 5 guests now: General Harrison Naylor, with a Colt Double Eagle. Gil Bradley, a CIA agent who might have a history as an assassin. RJ Katz, an FBI Special Agent who is an expert in accounting scams. David Dillard, the FBI computer specialist. Marcus Ashbrook, the senator from Wyoming who have ties with the Lone Wolf survivalists. Paul Hemmings, the Eagle County Deputy Sheriff was on his way to the ice-skating rink with his 2 daughters when he was hailed by a passer-by. There had been an accident and the car went off the road and down the hill side. When he reached the car, the driver lived long enough to whisper one word, "Murder". When Paul showed up at the safe house he caught sight of Julia swinging an ax. He made reference to Mac Granger, his buddy, having stayed here a few months ago recuperating from a wound. Yup! one thing leads to another with a murder and a suicide to investigate, and an attack on Julia, Paul decided to spend some extra time at the safe house. It just keeps getting better - great suspense - moving action - plenty of suspects - hard to put down. Definitely Recommended --m
Murder, Suspense, Danger, Intrigue

I always enjoy a Harlequin Intrigue by Cassie Miles. Her artistic voice stands out in a dress-alike crowd, and she sets her stories in the Colorado Rockies where I hope to someday live. In "Murder on the Mountain", Ms. Miles takes us to an FBI safe house, somewhere in the Rocky Mountains, run by Agent Julie Last. Her top priority is to keep those in her charge safe, and she loves her job, even when the "guests" act like whiny babies. A group of military, political, and computer experts gather at the safe house to put together a strategy to handle terrorist attacks. Only problem is none of them get a long worth a dime. Then a four star General in the group commits suicide, but Julie has reason to believe he was murdered, and she might very well be cooped up in a cabin, during a blizzard, with a killer running loose. But if she voices her suspicions, an investigation could uncover the safe house, and she'd be assigned somewhere else, which is not at all what she wants. The investigation of a suspicious car wreck leads Deputy Paul Hemmings to the safe house to question the occupants. Though he knew about the high profile people staying at the cabin, he didn't know it was a safe house until Julie was forced, after an attempt on her life, to let him in on it. Still, the General's death appeared to be suicide-the door to his bedroom was locked from the inside, the window hadn't been tampered with, and a signed suicide note lay on his desk. But Paul wasn't about to leave Julie alone in a cabin with a possible murderer sleeping down the hall, especially when someone had already tried to kill her. Ms. Miles always has the perfect combination of romance, characterization, and intrigue. She adds just a dash of romance, but not enough to gag me, with lots of suspense and fast action. I'm with the men here-bring on the high-speed chases, explosions, and flying bullets. Ms Miles is also not afraid to let her hero become protective of the heroine. I know today's feminists are screaming that they don't need a man to protect them, which may very well be true, but come on, let's cut the men some slack. We're dealing with millions of years of instinct. It's natural for a man to want to protect the woman he loves. Not to say the heroine should act wimpy. If the hero is in danger, I want to see her kicking ass to get to him. I also want to see them working together to get out of a sticky situation. But my heart will warm if the hero's protective gears start grinding. And no one in the Harlequin Intrigue line handles all of the above better than Cassie Miles.
