Jake and Marty Davinsky, an internationallly renowned jazz trumpet player, are both tenants in the same office building. They took an instant liking to each other after meeting in the elevartor and became good friends. When Bix Boynton, a student of Marty's dies during a music lesson, Marty becomes a prime suspect. Jake decides to help Marty and starts his own investigation which uncovers a number of very interesting other suspects. The reader is provided all the clues that Jakes's investigation reveals, as this intriguiing story unfolds. In addition to to helping to clear Marty, Jake is trying to rekindle an old romance with his secretary, Madalyn. Both Jake and the reader are surprised as the story climaxes to a very unexpected ending.
