A showcase of 50 gooey and chewy step-by-step recipes developed by Helen Witty, the noted cook and senior editor of the landmark "Cooks' Catalog." From the bite-size subcompact monster, to the many-mouthful maxi monster, Mrs. Witty's cookies are artforms of crispiness, crunchiness, chewiness, or cakiness. The recipes are her personal collection of the tastiest concoctions she's come across over the years: Coconutties, Bourbon Fruitcake Bars, Shortbreads, Toffee Tops, Peanut Butter Honeys, and more. Here are newtons packed with dates, wafers laced with nuts, soft confections overstuffed with fruit. Winner of a 1984 Tastemaker Award. Selection of the Book-of-the-Month Club and Better Homes & Gardens Family Book Service. Over 150,000 copies in print.
This is one of my favorite cookbooks. Mrs. Witty's instructions are remarkably clear, clear enough for a supervised child to follow. For the beginner, she goes into an explanation of how to work with, store and select ingredients and discusses which kitchen equipment is necessary for cookie baking. Nevertheless, this book should satisfy the seasoned baker. Her Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies are one of my favorites and when I brought in Mocha Walnut Chocolate Chip Cookies to work, someone suggested these cookies were good enough to market.
Terrific cookies

These are reliable recipes for great cookies. We are especially fond of the mocha walnut (pecan) chocolate chip cookies, pecan pie squares, toffee tops and hazelnut macaroons. I don't make them any particular size so can't vouch for the instructions on "maximonsters," but I have consistently tasty results.
