MrBallen: The Biography of Jonathan Bartlett Allen

Jonathan Bartlett Allen, better known by his online persona MrBallen, was born on October 1, 1988, in Quincy, Massachusetts. Growing up with a reporter father, Scott Allen, who worked at The Boston Globe, and a supportive mother, Jessie Thuma, Jonathan's life was rooted in storytelling from an early age. He was raised in a Catholic household and attended North Quincy High School, graduating in 2006.

After briefly attending the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Jonathan dropped out but returned to complete his degree in philosophy by 2010. It was during this period that he met Amanda, who would later become his wife and the mother of his three children. Despite academic pressures from his family, which emphasized academic success, Jonathan chose a path that defied expectations.

Driven by a desire for more than academics, Allen visited a recruiting office in Quincy after graduation and enlisted in the United States Navy with a determination to become a Navy SEAL. He joined SEAL Team Two and served in Virginia Beach. His service took him on deployments to Afghanistan and South America, but in 2014, during one of his missions in Afghanistan, his team was attacked. Jonathan was hit by a grenade, sustaining injuries to his hips and legs. He made a remarkable recovery, but by 2017, he was medically retired from the Navy. In recognition of his bravery and sacrifice, Allen was awarded a Purple Heart.
