I had heard that the characters in this book were generically sweet and boring (apparently an editor requested something similar to Tintin but starring a whole family), but I decided to get a copy anyway because it's by Herge. And also because I feel like "nice" characters are often called boring unfairly. :p
Well, it turns out they ARE generically sweet and boring, but that's actually a plus -- the book is phenomenally action-packed, and the mildness of the kids adds a layer of humor that may or may not be intentional. I love it! XD It actually seems more exciting than a typical Tintin story too, but maybe that's just because the stars seem weaker and more vulnerable.
I also like that Jocko is treated a little better than Snowy. The "silly pet gets into trouble" gag is still there, but his owners are more conscientious about rescuing him. It IS weird to see a chimp portrayed as such a good-natured pet, though. ._.
I'd recommend this to anyone who likes the combination of cute characters and rip-roaring adventures. Just be warned that it ends on a cliffhanger!
