Excellent Easy Reader with an Actual Plot

We took this book out from the library over a month ago. The first time we read it was on a Friday night. By Monday I was back at the library for the other Mr. Monkey books, and I'd already requested all of Mr. Mack's other books through the library system. But Mr. Monkey Bakes a Cake is still the favorite of both my 4 year old and my 6 year old. This isn't the typical 12 page easy reader book with a single problem for the character to solve. It takes 62 pages before Mr. Monkey has his ending! But neither my kids nor I cared that it was so long. In fact, none of us noticed because we were enjoying it so much. Mr. Monkey continually finds himself in trouble over and over again which made my kids laugh out loud. And it doesn't hurt that most of the words are easy enough for beginners to read (without the dumb it down language of far too many other books). My kindergartener actually took over reading to me that first Friday night. That's the first time he's ever done that and it's clearly because he was engaged in the plot and confident in the words. I need to return this to the library soon for other kids to discover. But I'm waiting for the copy I bought tonight to arrive so we don't have to go a single day without Mr. Monkey and his banana cake.
