Book Overview

What will this cosmic couple cook up next? Nancy Wood's lively take on how a duo of married chefs got all of us started is magically and hilariously brought to life through Timothy Basil Ering's extraordinary illustrations. Deep in the heavens, in the space between the clouds, Mr. and Mrs. God are hard at work in their Creation Kitchen. They've got frying pans and mixing bowls, beaters and whisks, and an oven big enough to roast a star - which is...

Non-Denominational Truth

A packaged blend of Divine and Science wrapped up in a beautifully illustrated bow. I recommend this book to every family living outside "the box" :) God isn't just a man or just a woman? Hark, a TEAM effort in the creation of the Universe. Right on! This book breeds open-mindedness! HOORAY! Creationists won't appreciate this book, but the rest of us DO!

Fabulously creative

Contrary to the title, this book isn't at all religious. It talks about how Mr and Mrs God created the sun, earth and all the creatures on it. The illustrations are beautiful and the story is so much fun! I have read it to my children's classes and the kids LOVED it!

Fantastic

This is very clever. It also provides a great opportunity for discussion about how our thoughts (religious views) differ from those who wrote this book and the whole idea of creation. It is a wonderful book filled with creativity and amazing art. If I were made of money it would be one book that I would buy for all my friends.

A Natural Selection

When you've been married for an eternity, you pretty much live in your own universe, and you never know what the two of you can concoct together, especially if you're the God family. Wood gives us a Mr. God who likes the big stuff -- stars, dinosaurs, explosions -- and who's man enough to admit the odd Jurassic blooper. Mrs. God bakes an earth whose crust isn't quite cooled. She whips up candy-colored fishies, only to see Mr. God's pelican gobble them up. Whoops. He makes it up to her, though, with a spectacularly huge whale. If we're made in their image, it's easy to see why: they may grouse a bit, but when they're in sync, watch out. Basil Ering conjures up a kitchen crammed with overflowing pots and erupting ovens; the corpulent Mr. and Mrs. God float in space heavily textured with acrylic paint in ethereal whites, grays and heavy blues. Spots of color draw our gaze to jars of eyeballs and boxes of claws. The whale floats so far off the page, we can only make out a lumpy section of tale overhanging the frying pan. The odd-shaped jars and Rube Goldberg-like kitchen gadgets aren't quite what you'd find at Target, and they fizzle and steam as Mr. and Mrs. God putter contentedly over molds of a doughy man and woman. They're creative, those Gods, but messy. At least they wear oven mitts. This tongue-in-cheek take on our origins shouldn't rile religious folks, but it may irk the godless types who want a more exacting scientific explanation than one that still places our solar system -- not to mention us -- at the apex of Creation. I suspect it's the latter group who will evolve a humorless gene about the whole thing.

Clever idea ... fantastic art!

I really like this book. The art is fantastic, the idea remarkable. In reading it, please keep in mind that it's a fantasy for kids ... not adults (except adults like me who have never grown up). I think the author had some very creative lines in this book and some scenes that I applaud. But I think it would have a wider audience as a Christian book since it's a God-themed base ... which agrees with my philosophy and beliefs. But it isn't Biblically based, which would turn some Christians off, but I think it's perfect for children in the author's targetted age range. Clever! Clever. Lighten up, people!
