Moving On: Quiet Moments for the Divorced

My husband and I work with troubled marriages. Some are going through divorce, others contemplating it. I originally began reading Dolly's book with these couples in mind. However, I quickly found that "Moving On" can benefit anyone. Divorced people aren't the only ones who may need help moving on in some area of life. Dolly's style is easy-going. Each chapter is short so I was able to read segments as I found time. Sometimes I read very little because I needed time to digest the content. I highly recommend this book for those who have been through a divorce or are going through one now. If you buy a copy for a friend, buy one for your own reading. You'll gain a better understanding of what he/she faces. You might find these "quiet moments" helpful for yourself as well. I plan to recommend this book to ministries, pastors, friends, counselors . . . !

I found "Moving On" enormously powerful. As I read each of the stories, I saw so much of my own divorce process, hurt and struggles. I wish there had been a book like this one when I was hurting. I have read them all and was continually searching for answers and guidance. Dolly's book is to the point and yet gives one hope that there is a way out. I believe it will help any reader, no matter what stage of divorce they are going through or even if they are just contemplating a divorce. The questions at the end of each story gave me pause to think about how I would have reacted if I had been that person.The same wisdom is there for both believers and non-believers. Even those walking a Christian life go through divorce and need to know that they are not alone. I plan to donate a copy to my church library and recommend it to my friends and family.I say ditto to all that Mr Dobbs wrote in his review.

Moving On--Required Reading

As one who has been through a divorce and dealt with what it meant to myself, my spouse, and our child, I found "Moving On" enormously powerful. I believe it will help any reader, no matter how skeptical, hurt, or distressed, to deal with the agony of divorce. In addition, I recommend it as remedial counsel to anyone who is even slightly concerned about a future divorce, one's own or that of a friend. In fact, I would make it required reading for every counselor, minister, and divorce lawyer and in every high school sex and marriage education class. Its ounce of prevention could easily be worth tons of disastrous courtroom cures! Dickinson's book consists of personal stories of a great variety of men, women, and children affected by divorce, both the principals and members and friends of their families: battered women, a Viet Nam veteran, the wealthy and impoverished, a modern female David, a WWII captive of the Japanese, to mention just a few. It also includes stories by the author about her own and her family's travails. In all the stories there is a source of help. Often it is the represented by wisdom from the Bible, both Old and New Testament (happily using modern translations). But the same wisdom is there for both believers and non-believers, and universally healing.(Managers and management experts take notice: Here is a book that will help with far more than just two-person relationships. It has much to offer to corporate relationships as well!)Dickinson's style is highly readable, always engaging, direct and succinct. She enjoys some wry bits of humor, e.g. the woman who loved lilies but ignored much of her life: The Lily of Denial. The movement to help single drivers get acquainted: bumper Decal Dating! One story which could be called The Parable of the Cracked Pot. The idea of the "starter marriage." The true meaning of a bit of street talk: F-I-N-E!Recommendation: as many stars as there are!
