This incredible collection of essays and stories covers motherhood from an amazing number of angles. Susan Cahill, an experienced editor of anthologies and an author herself, has done an incredible job of finding a wide and varied group of viewpoints on what is is to be a mother, and what the role of mother in our society means. There are contributions from writers, poets, psychologists, philosophers... You'll find Margaret Mead, Sylvia Plath, Simone de Beauvoir, Henry Miller, Tillie Olson, Philip Slater, Colette, Daniel Ellsburg...and countless others. You couldn't ask for a more provocative and thorough approach! I could imagine a women's studies course being taught using this single book alone - it's that rich! But it's not "heavy reading," and is entertaining as well as thought-provoking. I've bought one for my own mother and mother-in-law, and recommend giving this book to every mother you know!
