Give it up for "More than Foregiveness"

The book is an excellent work by Scott Deneff, a Wesleyan Christian writer. The book starts off with some basic psychology background in needs and self actualization and how that applies to Holiness or Sanctification in Christian living. Later, the book gets very in depth in discussing areas in every Christians relationship with God that need addressing on a regular basis. The last part of the book goes into Christ's persona written with a frank tone that is honest and occasionally cutting and personally challenging. The only negative comment I can make for the book is that I really wished there had been a short chapter that "wrapped things up" and brought the authors thoughts into a summary or something similar to a conclusion. Instead the book ends abruptly as if the computer printer ran out of paper. The book is printed in soft cover with fairly easy to read type and was well manufactured.

Holiness Literature

. The teaching in this book is excellent. However, it must be read carefully. It is very easy to misunderstand what Steve is trying to say and to jump to conclusions. For instance, another review complains that Steve is calling Jesus a Lord of darkness because Steve compares to Jesus to a black hole in his book. . However, the point Steve is attempting to make is that our very lives need to revolve around Jesus, just like matter is revolving (and being sucked into) a black hole. Often our lives revolve around our families, our jobs, our church, etc. But holiness is having our life revolve completely around Jesus. . So, Steve's writing is confrontive and challenges some of the preconcieved ideas the reader might have, but nothing in his writing is un-Christian or non-holiness. Just like the Bible, it can be misinterpreted wrongly by an over-zealous few.. I really enjoyed reading "More Than Forgiveness." It changed a lot of my misconceptions concerning holiness and challenged me to make sure that all that I am is centered on Jesus. Every holiness preacher should read it and take its teaching to heart. It has made it into a number of my sermons.. My only complaint (and it is a big one) is that I don't enjoy his writing style. I am a very logical thinker and like to go directly from Point A to Point B. Steve has a tendency to jump around. I found myself confused quite a number of times as I tried to figure out what point he was trying to make. Or even what point he was on. Was he still on the same point or had he jumped back to a previous one without warning me? I had to read chapter two a couple of times before I figured out what he was trying to say. I would have enjoyed the book a lot more if it was structured better so there would be less confusion.. Other than that, I found the book to be thoroughly Wesleyan and Christ-focused. It should be required reading at Holiness Colleges. In fact, his other book "Whatever Became of Holiness?" was required reading in my Doctrine of Holiness class.. If someone could rewrite this book in a clear, well-though out manner, it would be worth any price.

More Than Forgiveness

This book is most excellent. Pastor DeNeff uses everyday terms in writing about a call to Holy living. DeNeff uses his intellect and personal experiences to throw together what I see as a sermon per chapter. Hearing Pastor DeNeff every Sunday at College Wesleyan Church in Marion, IN, has helped me to grasp some of the ideas in the book a little better though. I give DeNeff 5 stars, its a challenging book with a guide to the way Christ lived his life and the way we should ulitmately live ours. Definately Recommend.
