Tales from the heartland

I grew up in the Mid West, and have always loved the prairie. Sadly it is the most endangered habitat in the world, and well over 99% destroyed. Sandberg's stories of the Rutabaga country and the land of liver and onions really captures what the true feeling of this strange and lost world that was the prairie country. I long to be with Dippy the Wisp as she runs across the prairies and listens to stories told by Hatrack the Horse and the potato face blind man. I long to go to the train station so early in the morning and empty out my rag bag of all my spot cash money and buy a long slick yellow leather slab ticket with a blue spanch across it. I long to ride the train until the train runs out of tracks, and then forty ways further. Read this book to your children. Look up Sandberg reading this on youtube, and try to mimic his accent. Read this book to your children and make it part of their heritage. Read this book to your children and years later they will thank you for it. They may suffer when they speak in class of "Wednesday evening between the twilight and the gloaming" and nobody realizes that they are talking about a pigeon, or when they comment to a friend that they will never "sit with the sitters or knit with the knitters". Read this book to your children. They will grow up to be better people because you did.

Great Stories

I read a story from this book or its sequel almost every night to my child. The original book was lost on a trip and this purchase replaced it. The stories are wonderful and well written. I like Carl Sandburg and I am used to the cadence of his writing; which may be a little challenging at first. (but worth the effort!)
