Book Overview

Sam Loyd (1841-1911) was America's greatest originator of puzzles. For more than 50 years, his ingenious posers, appearing in innumerable newspaper and magazine articles, stumped and delighted an American public running into the millions. When Loyd and Gardner collaborate, the result can only be puzzling delight

In the history of puzzling, there has been none better than Sam Loyd and in the history of recreational mathematics; there has been none better than Martin Gardner. Therefore, when Martin Gardner selects and edits a collection of Loyd's puzzles, you expect a lot. In this case, you get it. The puzzles of course are of widely varying difficulty, some of which is due more to the experience of the reader than the complexity of the puzzle. One of the most interesting aspects of the book is the illustration that accompanies each puzzle. They are original and reflect the world of Loyd, which was the late nineteenth century. Detailed solutions to the puzzles are included, which certainly is needed if you reach the level of dangerous frustration. If you are looking for some interesting and challenging puzzle fun, then there is no better thing to do than look back to the time of Sam Loyd. These puzzles are timeless.

How come?

How come that this book is still unrated. Sam Loyd, in my idea was(is still) the best puzzle creator. I really can't imagine his creativity, thousands of good puzzles of different types.
