Book Overview

It is now 1986, and the preachers of the Gospel United Church are preparing for their much-anticipated Triennial General Conference. The last time readers encountered the good Rev. Theophilus Simmons, he was a newlywed and the pastor of a modest-sized congregation in Memphis. Now he's the father of three and running a congregation in St. Louis. His best friend, Rev. Eddie Tate, is now with a fast growing church in Chicago, but he is getting real frustrated...

Ms. Bowen has done it again!!!

I have read all of Ms. Bowen's books and More Church Folk definitely didn't disappoint. The characters were well developed and the plot kept you on edge anticipating what was going to happen next. This book will have you laughing and in suspense all in the same chapter; it is definitely a must read. Can't wait for Denzelle's story. If you haven't read any of her previous work you MUST pick up the books; although it isn't necessary to read them beforehand they will really have you re-evaluate your relationship with Christ in a good way...you don't want to be one of "those" Church folk!!! LOL Ms. Bowen has truly done it again!!!

Time changes people don't.........

I loved the first book Church Folk and this was just as good. The church family has gotten older, but no wiser. There are still those in the church that think that it is a game. If you want a book that is laugh out loud funny and almost too true when discussing some of the antics that go on in the various church communities then grab this book and read. I have enjoyed all of the books that Michele Bowen has written and this one was no different.

If you thought Church Folks was funny, this one will take you to another level entirely. It is now 1986, and the Rev Theopolis Simmons is in for another problem. Word has reached the mainland that the bishops over in Africa are acting like plum fools, disrespecting the titles they wore and due to the diligence of one of the workers, whose uncle own a watermelon farm and come across a potion(or drug or synthetic) called WP21 that makes men feel like the young boys again for a time but sadly, the comedown from it makes you go into serious cold turkey. Several of the corrupt bishops were content on selling this stuff, but instead they were using up the dang product, which caused some serious problems amongst them and they couldn't really sell it. The guys they used to help out; Cleotis Clayton(Goldean's cousin who served time already for the previous incident in 1963, refer to Church Folks)Dotsy and Gray can't seem to make head or tails how to work this but get someone to help em break it down; Cleotis got Rico Sneed(remember Up at the College)to help with the computer but even as some of you recall have nasty little habits of his own. Add up some skinheads, an aunt, crazy church folks and then some more, and you got a great little story that is wholesome and worthwhile but not without its twists and turns. More Church Folks is worth it.Kudos to Ms Bowen for your stories.

The return to the Church Folks environs is a terrific insightful tale

More Church Folks Michele Andrea Bowen Grand Central, Jul 28 2010, $24.99 ISBN: 9780446577762 In 1986 at the Gospel United Church, older flock members remember the two-decade plus old scandal at the Triennial General Conference (see Church Folk) as another meeting is about to convene. At this church meeting, bishops are elected to fill vacancies. Senior Bishop Percy Jennings wants good Christian males to sit in these critical seats. Bishop Jennings believes Pastors Theophilus Simmons and Eddie Tate are ideal individuals who would make super Bishops. He needs at least one of them to gain a seat if he is to clean the church of its avarice embezzlers who cannot spell Bible. Bishop Jennings learns something nasty is occurring in Mozambique. He assigns Pastor Tate's mentee Pastor Denzelle Flowers to investigate. Denzelle's day job supervisor is elated that his ordained minister FBI agent Flowers is going to Africa to look into drug smuggling. Pastor Flowers soon discovers a scheme to sell illegal sexual enhancement drugs to Bishop Jennings' prime adversary's mentee Pastor Sonny Washington; they plan to extort the votes of those caught in an adulterous scandal. The return to the Church Folks environs is a terrific insightful tale that once again reflects on the religious leaders being a microcosm of the larger society. Some care about the spiritual and other needs of their flock while some of the leadership care about themselves as Michele Andrea Bowen makes a strong case that just because you're a bishop or pastor does not mean you are holier than the congregation. Although the ensemble cast can be overwhelming for the reader as well as church officials, with interesting FBI intrigue enhancing the thriller, fans will relish this exciting entry as the avarice and the nurturing battle for the souls of the congregation with motives wider than the chasm between heaven and hell.
