I gave this book 5 stars because on some days her mom doesn't say where she's from. But, he shows it in the illustrations. On the close ups they are great. You can see every little detail. He makes the pictures come alive.

The book Mamma Were Are You From? taught me a lesson. It showed me that the little girl wants to know where her mother is from. It was fantastic. It especially tells you what their life was like. For example, it showed me where they got the food, like fish and ice. It showed people helping by putting the string beans on the table. People were drinking soda, eating fried fish, and having fun at the cookout. Chris's illustrations are fantastic. I like his drawings. Chris Soentpiet, you're the best!

Tenderness and strength in one simple story

Marie Bradby's poetic language is the perfect medium for the mother's message of pride and nostalgia as she tells her curious child about life in the segregated South. Despite her happy memories of close family, special treats from her mother, and working with her sister, the mother (as a child) is aware of segregation and bothered by it in ways that a child would be. The lovely artwork perfectly complements the words, casting an almost surrealistic glow over the "memory" passages while a sharper, modern light illuminates the here and now. Highly recommended.
