Modern Livestock and Poultry Production gives the reader a very true sense of the world of the livestock industry. It sets the scene for work in the field with an overview of the industry, then moves into detailed and engaging discussions of specific species. The book addresses animal genetics, breeding, nutrition, biotechnology and product promotion, based on the most up-to-date research available. The book thoroughly addresses such major farm animal enterprises as beef cattle, swine, sheep, horses, poultry and dairy cattle. And, it covers minor animal enterprises including rabbits, bison, ratites, llamas and alpacas. All of this is complemented by an extensive discussion of career opportunities and job expectations in the industry, as well as such industry concerns as environmental and safety issues.
There is a newer edition out, but I am still waiting for the price to come down. This 7th edition is better buy at the moment. I'm not even a farmer or agriculture student - just someone wanting to learn, but I'm reading the book with pleasure. The language is clear, and the coverage is more than in-depth! Do you want to know about ethology (animal behavior), animal welfare, the anatomy of a pig, the history of animal agriculture back to prehistory, or just practical information about livestock farming? The answers are here. Worth the price of the book. As for the physical quality, I don't see any problem with paper or print. Nice bold print. The pictures are black & white. The spectacular color pictures and glossy paper only run up the price of college textbooks.
Great book, but expensive as all hell

This is a really good, thorough livestock book. It covers more than a vet tech student will ever need to know about food animal production. Having said all that, it's way too expensive for a mostly black and white book printed on cheap paper that's one step above newsprint in quality. The only way someone would fork over 140 bucks for this thing is if they were forced to by an instructor. If you have to spend 140 bucks on a damned textbook, at least this is a good one.
