Compiled by a feminist, this book is precisely what the title says. The quotations within represent a wide spectrum of misogyny. Some are truly appalling, even to the run-of-the-mill male chauvinist; these are primarily the ones from Islamic and Hindu sources. Others are quite astute, though certainly politically incorrect, observations on the more exasperating qualities of women. In a few cases, I can't figure out why a quotation is included at all. Other choices are contradictory. She includes several quotations expressing lust towards women, implying that lust for women is bad; then there are several more quotations urging men to abstain from intercourse with women so that they can focus on spiritual matters, implying that not feeling lust for women is bad. Which way does she want it? Also, there are a few items that Miss Morgan does not seem to realize undercut her case. For example, there are clear but seldom-mentioned statistics showing that stepfathers have a very high probability of abusing or even murdering their stepchildren. Miss Morgan includes several news items about stepfathers murdering and raping their stepdaughters, apparently not realizing that she is demonstrating that mothers will not protect their daughters (or sons) from the men they bed down with and that it requires the patriarchal figure, the real father, to protect children. In her introduction, Miss Morgan remarks that after reading enough of these quotations, she actually started to believe them. "This was the most shocking proof of the power of propaganda. I could see that if continual subjection to this sort of thing over a period of weeks could put doubts into *my* head, then, over the centuries, the steady trickle of misogyny must have a sure effect on the relative confidence of women and the people who believe women to be inferior." Yes, Miss Morgan, that's the most shocking thing about propaganda: that *you* - of all people! - are susceptible to it.
