This one has me in a quandry. On it's own it's a solid 4* story but compared to it's prequel it's more of a 3* read. Without the prequel it really doesn't make sense, a lot of what's going on is as a consequence of Mirror Dreams (Wizard Laenan Kite Books). It's is quite dependent on that story. This is also a darker, more mature story. There's less of the sarcastic comments and more of a sense of having to do these things in order to protect his world. Laenan Kite seems a lot more world-weary. He's fought too much, lived too long, tried too hard to protect everything and it's going to pot, again. I could see where that would pall. The end leaves you wondering if there will be yet another sequel as it's not clear what happens after the evil has been defeated. A further sign of maturity of the characters and probably the author. Overall an interesting read but for me it wasn't as satisfying as Mirror Dreams (Wizard Laenan Kite Books) however I would continue to read Catherine Webb and would like to see another story in this sequence.
