"...compelling portrait of today's Army combines a keen analytic sense with the understanding of a journalist who has reported wars in Cyprus and Vietnam..." This description may be from another edition of this product.
I gave this 'book' a 5-star rating because at the time I read it back in the late 60's and early 70's this 'book' was actually a collection of articles that appeared in The Atlantic Monthly magazine. The Atlantic Monthly press would also publish Ward Just's new novel of the time "A Family Trust". At the time most of these chapters appeared in print the content was very relevant, but after 35 years the one review, in my view, is very correct: the book is outdated. But as far as being a 'lazy' attempt from Ward Just, I cannot at all agree with that view. Almost all these chapters appeared one a month or so in the Atlantic Monthly magazine, as such articles of a magazine are written much differently from those forming a cohesive book. Admittedly, there are some sharp edges where this articles transitioned to a book, plus this was at a time early in the writings of Mr. Just. After Vietnam and Newsweek reporting, he was just then starting out on his own as a novelist. I am a Vietnam era 'military man' and I eagerly awaited each month's articles presented in The Atlantic Monthly. At the time they were up to date, cutting edge, and quite relevant. Most people having interest in this book now would probably be either collectors or 'just' plain fans of Ward Just. No pun intended. Semper Fi.
