A great book the casual student of military history

In terms of non-academic explorations of military history, this book/chat is both informative and exceptionally rendered. There are three major sections. The first is a brief overview of the academic study of military history as a subject laid against a brief synopsis of the main points and revolutions in warfare. The second part contains the timecharts proper. The charts give a concise narrative of great military events from all continents with dips into military invention and significant political events. At the end of each page of timechart there is a fold-out giving short biographies of famous commanders, adding depth and context. The next section in an index to great battles with an attached chronology. Detailed maps of a few key examples round this section out. There are several other smaller segments listing military museums, detailing naval and air warfare milestones and sections on the World Wars. Overall this is a good book for a general treatment of the subject, but it is more geared toward the casual reader, not those looking for serious understanding of this complex subject.
