At last! This book offer a unique and much-needed overview of Canadian midwifery. It's organized clearly and written in an engaging style, perfectly complemented by great black & white photographs and a nice clean layout. Balanced information is interspersed with quotes from actual midwifery consumers, rounding out 'the experience' nicely. This is mainly written for parents who are considering their prenatal care options or who have already chosen to go with midwives. Family and friends curious and/or perplexed by parents' decision will also greatly benefit. The book does a great job of providing practical information on what to expect in midwifery care (very challenging since midwifery varies so widely across Canada), from the initial choice to saying goodbye post-partum. This book is also provides valuable experiential insight for care providers, or anyone interested in Canadian midwifery. Some of my favourite sections are: What a Canadian Midwife Is, What a Midwife Isn't, and Midwifery Myths and Reality, which gets to the heart of things more than the FAQ.Highly recommended.

A lovely book- general and with good references to more information; it still gives the potential midwifery client a great idea of what to expect from a midwife in Canada. The birth stories add a great personal dimension, and provide the expectant family with good insight into other birth experiences. A must for anyone in Canada looking for quality, reliable information when choosing their care options.
