Reporter Dylan Alexander is on the last leg of a tour of Europe when she sees a woman on a hill outside Prague. Knowing of her special gift to see ghosts, Dylan is aware the woman is deceased. When she hears the woman beg her for help, Dylan does her best to ignore the plea. Unable to walk away from the desperate entreaty, Dylan is led by the mysterious apparition to a hidden and dank cave. Initially spooked, Dylan leaves only to go back later when her curiosity demands her return. What she faces in that dark grotto changes her life forever, especially after she takes a picture of her discovery with her digital camera. Rio has been hidden in the Ancient's secret lair for six months. Six months in which he has denied himself the nourishment he needs. Having suffered the ultimate betrayal, Rio wants to end it all. When a nosy woman enters the concealed chamber, Rio urges her to leave and does his best to not let his deprived senses focus on the blood roaring in her veins. When she takes pictures of his hideaway and then swiftly disappears, Rio knows trouble is brewing. After notifying his fellow warriors, he is given his orders. Locate the woman and make sure she does not expose the existence of his kind. Rio postpones his death because now he must find the woman who could bring down his entire race with one download of her computer. Rio locates Dylan by smell alone. Upon seeing the tiny crimson birthmark on the back of Dylan's neck, Rio alters his initial plans. It is a birthmark that Rio can not ignore, no matter how much Dylan wants to return home. With Dylan's special gift, Rio and his fellow Breeds strive to come one step closer to finding and deleting the evil that continues to plague their kind. I am having a hard time trying to explain how fabulous I found this book without gushing like a Lara Adrian fan-girl. So I'll stop trying to suppress my fan-girl squeal and I'll get started on my serious gush session. MIDNIGHT RISING is absolutely superb and exactly the type of story I envisioned for Rio. Having been betrayed by his Breedmate in the first installment of this wonderful series, KISS OF MIDNIGHT, Rio was the character that I ached for. I was scared that this beautiful and powerful man would give up on life. Dylan's entrance into his life was the catalyst he needed to step beyond his sorrow and humiliation. She was the perfect type of woman to bring out the best in Rio. Dylan's allegiance, even when she didn't know why she wanted to be loyal, was impressive. She won MY loyalty with her ability to see past the damaged man that Rio was to the whole and innately sensual man he has always been. Rio's concern with harming the woman that was coming to mean so much to him scared him to death but that didn't stop this man. He had the ability to give Dylan the love she needed without making her feel trapped. MIDNIGHT RISING is a book of many nuances. As soon as one "mystery" would get explained, Ms. Adrian would add more teasers t

LOVING this series!

This book is STILL just as great as the 3 that came before it. Rio makes such an interesting hero, seeing the trauma to his character from the first book, and the continued pain we witness in his character in books 2 and 3. I loved seeing how Lara Adrian resolved this issue.

Pulled My Heartstrings

I was totally blown away at how good this book was. Wasn't expecting much from the previouse reviews, but this was awesome. It starts off slow, although I think her books tend to do that, but then WOW. Some people stated they thought their relationship just started off to quick. Disagree. Dylan is thrust into this situation that is scarey and diffrent, but she can't help feeling this odd attraction to this man who has kidnapped her. She is desprate to get home to her mom who is dying of cancer and the emotional interaction between her mom, oh man, very good. Rio is a wounded man inside and out. Ava his breedmate who betrayed him in the first book is still unsure he even wants to live anymore because he feels so messed up. He meets Dylan who changes his views, but he fights his attraction because he feels he is to raw for someone like her. But with her gentle love he finally realizes he is worth being loved. Couple good love scences to add to the mix was good and hot. Overall a very good book, give it a chance it will be definatly worth it.

Tour-de-force Vampire Romance!

"Lara Adrian's Book #4, MIDNIGHT RISING is yet another tour-de-force read in her Midnight Breed vampire series for Bantam Dell (April 2008). In the Czech Republic, tabloid journalist, Dylan Alexander is on vacation hiking in the mountains with her mother's friends when she sees a female ghost beckoning to her. At the cost of possibly losing her job, Dylan is on the trip in place of her mother, who requested she go because she has terminal cancer. Dylan hasn't seen a dead person since her childhood and this ethereal woman leads her directly to a dark cavern and pleads with her to "Save him". By flashlight, Dylan sees hieroglyphics, a skull and an empty crypt and senses a strange presence and flees. The next day pressured by her editor for a tabloid story, Dylan returns alone to further investigate her discovery and while taking pictures she stumbles on a mysterious man lying on the cave's floor. Little does she know, Rio is one of the Midnight Breed, an elite band of warrior vampires, who protect both immortals and humans from evil Rogues that want to control the world. Rio had been charged by the Breed to seal the cavern months ago that formerly housed unspeakable evil. In his scarred and emotionally damaged state from being badly betrayed by his former wife, Rio is ready to end his life and had planned to seal himself in the tomb as well. However, when Dylan escapes with her camera of photos, Rio knows he must follow her and prevent her from showing them to anyone. When Rio catches up to Dylan and discovers she's already uploaded the photos to her boss in the U.S., he kidnaps her and takes her back first to the Darkhaven compound in Germany and then the Midnight Breed headquarters in Boston. Unbeknownst to Rio, Dylan bears the crimson teardrop-shaped mark of a Breedmate, the only human women that can mate with his kind. Can Rio save Dylan from evil forces they know little about and can Dylan heal his broken heart? With finely penned larger than life alpha heroes, riveting unique plots and to-die-for passion, Ms. Adrian is an author, who understands what readers are truly looking for in a great romance. Lara Adrian is a force to be reckoned with in paranormal romance and her star continues to rise with MIDNIGHT RISING."

It Keeps Getting Better

In this 4th installment of Adrian's Midnight Breed Series, the author once again presents a fast-paced, edgy, compelling story in a genre that is becoming increasingly full of fluff. The character of Rio is scarred from an explosion caused by the betraying of his own wife, and Adrian manages to pull off the angry, untrusting hero without making him brooding or cliqued. Dylan, the herione, is intellegent and caring, which makes her a perfect match for Rio. After the last novel, I had wondered where Adrian would go, since she killed off her main villian, but the new bad-guy, Dragos (the fact that this was his father's name was confusing to me for awhile, but I got over it) seems more multi-layered than her previous evil-dooers. All in all, the story was so good I finished it in a day, and will now have to maniacally count the days until the next book comes out in December!
