Your paying for Visual C++ compiler/IDE ... not a book.

This is just an alternative way of buying the compiler and IDE for Visual C++. (Same for C# ... I've got the deluxe learning edition of it as well). I've skimmed the book, and found it lacking. Might be a decent starting point for a beginner. I simply use the MSDN archive that comes on the disk for help. So if you're looking for a way to buy Visual C++ compiler and IDE (i.e. Visual Studio), then this will probably save you a few dollars over buying just the software, and you get a book that you might give to someone, or just add to your bookshelf. But don't pay this amount for the book. The book is a freebie...(I used to work at a company that paid for my MSDN subscription. But now I don't, and my last MSDN disks were becoming obsolete. If you're in the same boat, this is cheapest way I've found to get latest Visual Studio and C++ compiler.)

Great buy if you don't have VS.NET yet

If you don't own VS.NET this is a good setup to get you started in VC++.NET. You get the VC++ IDE and the Examples CD and the Step-By-Step book. If you already own VS.NET, don't buy this... buy the step-by-step book by itself. It comes with the examples CD. If you are stupid enough to not read the description on the box or online, and realize this, then it's your own fault.
