Excellent coverage of MS SQL

I read this book right after it came out. This book was instrumental in getting my MCDBA certification. I found the reading much easier than the Books On-Line (BOL). In my opinion that is why you purchase technical books, to get a clearer understanding of what the documentation that comes with the product is trying to say. This is not to say I think the BOL are bad, this book just does a better job of explaining some of the topics. To give this book a poor review because you can learn MS-SQL 7.0 from the Books On-Line is absurd, the BOL contain everything you need to know, same as the Oracle documentation does for an Oracle RDMS, reading either can be a bit much though.Steven A. Easy to read and understand

So many authors cannot explain things well, or leave out important details. Ron Talmage gives understandable explanations that made things very clear to me. I found the explanations of Cube and Rollup in the Microsoft materials very unclear. Mr. Talmage's explanations were practical and simple which made me wonder why other authors make it so hard! Mr. Talmage's book is not intended to be a Microsoft comprehensive reference, it is intended for real-world practioners and gives clear, detailed explanations of the things you need to know. I teach courses in SQL Server and recommend this book to my students. I heartily disagree with some of the negative comments I have read. I wonder if these people really use SQL Server. If so, they would find this book an invaluable reference.

What's new in SQL 7

What is new in SQL 7 is the content of this book. I really like how the author highlight every important points that had changed from SQL 6.X. From its relational engine to data architecture to store procedures, all the essential points and new features of SQL 7 are clearly presented. This book is a good resource for DBA who has general knowledge of SQL 6.X and needs to get up to date quickly on SQL 7. Although on the back cover it said for user level of intermediate to advanced, it is also a good book for beginners too.

Excellent for learning and a great reference

This is easily the best book out there on SQL Server 7. It's clear, concise, and all that crap that the fake reviewers from book publishers always write in their reviews. But it's also a great book to keep around the office, for the times when your DBA is on another vacation, and you've got to write your own stored procedures by Friday. It's so good that my boss went out and bought copies for the whole office (of course that was after I bought mine). It's taught me more about SQL Server than I ever thought I'd want to know. I hope this guy is still around when MS comes out with 7.5 or 8.0 or whatever, because I'll want his reference on the subject.

Pretty good - read it at Border's for 2 hours bef ordering

Already brought other SQL 6.5/7.0. SQL 7.0 Dev, sql Comp, Using sql 7.0 by Wynkoop. So looking for book that takes time to explain concepts. Example Linked servers is new, good/decent coverage, vs remote servers. Other SQL 7.0 did not cover. So looking for SQL 7.0 books that cover stuff not found in others. Unfortunately I just only ordered it so I may revise my review later.I am taking MS 1 week course to pass SQL 7.0 70-028 exam, so anything that helps with this. Other books by MS ADM 7.0/SQL 7.0 Unleashed not out yet so I am stuck. Ones I already have by Osborne I would give 3-4 stars.
