The gate for the beginner

SQL Server, this is the topic that I think it is very hard for me to learn. But after I have try this book, it is really make really funny to learn SQL server. I learn a lot of basic things such as table, query, rule, user define function... from this book and now I could SQL Server to manage my own database. There are two advantage that I found in this book: 1. Each chapter is guide you from the basic and have many screen shoot for you to learn. You do not need to have any previous knowledge about SQL server. What you need is the basic task with windows operating system, such as shut down, restart, moving windows dialog box, resize windows dialog box, copy/cut or paste file... 2. The author use a very simple word to explain to the reader and very easy to follow each step. Whether this book is design for the beginner, you will need to read additional book after you read this book. This book just give you a starting point only, if you want to master sql server 2000 you should try to find another resource which guide you deeply in this technology.

Elegant and Powerful

Rebecca Riordan's Step by Step for SQL Server is one of the best beginning tutorials I have ever read. What Rebecca does for her readers is very subtle yet extremely slick and effective. The key is that she provides an elegant database, the Arromatherapy Database, that she uses to illustrate the myriad and possibly overwhelming features of Enterprise SQL. In 30 short chapters, she methodically and painstakingly takes us through each step building, running then, suprsingly, deleting each feature we create. She allows no build up of slick little inane programs that we will never ever use again....just more...well more methodical methodology. At the end of this book, we know where everything is and have a solid idea about how to use it. Better, still, if we pay close attention to her database, we begin to learn how to actually structure a database so that all the features workThis is the true magic of Ms. Riordans work. The interaction of her database and the intensive hands-on exercises provide a uniquie learning experience from a very sophisticated and knowledgeable professional. This is a deceptively simple yet powerful tutorial. Her Database alone is worth the price of admission.

'Step by Step Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Programming'

This is a well written book suitable for beginners like myself with limited exposure on database etc. The examples are clear and free of errors. I completed the first 21 chapters in two days. I would recommend this book to anyone new to the subject of SQL servers.

Excellent SQL Starter Guide!

Once again Rebecca has taken a difficult topic - SQL Server 2000 - and turned the complexitities of the topic around. I have found this book to be an excellent guide to using Microsoft SQL Server 2000, and a good reference to fall back on.I would recommend this to anyone who is either planning or currently doing work with SQL Server 2000, you will find this to be an invaluable additional to the reference material included with SQL Server.Buy it today, you will not regret it!

Rebecca's first book was not a fluke!

Any time someone writes a great book, you're always tempted to wonder if it was just dumb luck. But Rebecca has once again proven that she can not only use an effective writing style to get a message across. She can also leverage her vast knowledge of databases and the SQL Server product to produce a compelling way to get people into the product.I usually do not get excited about "step by step" books, but I made a promise to myself that I would look at this one. In the end I could not put it down until I had gone all the way through it. Her command of not just the subject matter but of the book's target audience and how to keep them interested and entertained while they are learning truly stunning. By the end of the book, you will know more than most of the people who claim to be SQL Server experts, but you will have learned most of under anesthesia since the pace of the book is not too daunting at all.Kudos to Rebecca! Her first book gave people the knowledge of how to design databases properly, and now her second book will take you through the important information about the world's most compelling database product!
