This is an older book on metallurgy and does not contain info on some of the more "modern" techniques but this book excels at explaining the "what really happens" in very understandable language. For example, while hunting for info to do some induction heat treating on my parts I have read 3-4 books on induction heating ... but the knowledge was less than forthcoming - I found some starting recipes etc but so what. I read this book and now that I really understand an isothermal transformation diagram and how to apply it to heat treating so I now understand why things work as they do and what to optimize etc. Now I can make intelligent tradeoffs on the inductive heating frequency vs. the quenching techniques vs. the type of steel etc. If you want recipes look at other books but if you want fundamental knowledge then this is a very approachable starting point. FYI - I am an entrepreneur / engineer with no formal background in ME.
