Finally, what I've been looking for.

The foundations for pre-engineered steel buildings are somewhat unique in the field of architectural engineering and pose some design problems that have to be addressed in the field. For quite awhile I've looked for an engineering book that discusses and gives guidance on those issues. Most of the ones I've found in the past, briefly touch on the subject and then say "consult your local structural engineer". Well, I am the local structural engineer. So I was happy to find this book which does discuss those issues (lateral loads, moment resisting foundations, etc.) in a way that can be used in the real world, specifically with the construction techniques typically used for metal buildings, complete with optional approaches and sample calculations. I would recommend it highly for anyone who designs foundations for metal buildings.

excellent resource!

I am a civil engineer (specializing in land development) trying to learn more about structural engineering. Pre-fab steel buildings are common and I regularly get calls in my consulting business related to this topic. I have little depth in this branch of engineering but this text explains many important topics you would want to know to get started. The book is particularly good for introducing the engineer to the actual construction nuances- many items I suspect a good GC would simply know as "rules of thumb" are explained with exhaustive reasoning and descriptions. This book is not mathematically rigorous / analytic but it will provide various design options and compare the relative strengths and weaknesses of each design selection. I just got the book a couple weeks ago and have gone through the first 5 chapters plus chapter 12 on foundations. I strongly recommend readers to force themselves to answer all of the questions at the end of each chapter which can be a little tedious (isn't it always?) but definitely worth it. Overall, I have nothing negative to say about this book.

Very Informative

This book provides a good overview of metal building design and construction. It covers the design of the buildings themselves, as well as the design of the foundations to support the buildings, which is normally done by an outside structural engineer.

Enlightening

This book explains topics only treated in a consultant's office. If ever. Newman has accurately identified relevant and otherwise hidden concepts for development in his book. Also very well researched.

A permenant reference added to the industry's publications.

The auther has poured his knowledge of metal building systems into each chapter. The material is fresh and current. The auther addressed most of the problems encountered by metal building professionals. You will find examples of the current details and designs of metal buildings used throughout the USA. Also, this book provides a guidline of the important issues in metal buildings.
