A lonely fisherman with a broken heart plans to live alone on his floating houseboat in the middle of the Louisiana swamp to get sober, or die trying to. Just before he gives up his struggle, he has to rescue a fresh-water mermaid tangled in his fish trap. At first, he thinks it is alcohol poisoning making him hallucinate. He doesn't believe that she is real until she saves him from drowning in sorrow.
