Belle Palmer is a bit taken aback when the new neighbor down the road turns out to be Gary Myers, the guy she dated in high school. Actually, if then were now, she stalked him until he asked her out. The romance never took off, in spite of Belle's best efforts. If then were now, she'd have realized he was gay and saved everybody at least a little bit of angst. Gary is working on some research on elk in the wild, which Belle finds a bit interesting. She's more interested when Gary is found drowned. Following up on some of his research, Belle is threatened. Gary's partner Malcolm "Mutt" Malloy shows up to help take care of all the sordid details that follow any death. Belle and Mutt become friends. Belle also finds herself liking the new temp in her office, a pregnant woman named YoYo. YoYo has a gambling problem, which she swears is under control. She's a whiz in the office, but has some family entanglements that make her life interesting. Who doesn't? MEMORIES ARE MURDER is the fourth Belle Palmer mystery, and very nicely done. It is definitely more cozy than not. The descriptions of Belle's life in Sudbury are spot-on and generally humorous. The plot probably won't stump serious mystery readers, and the writing will keep the rest of us entertained.
