I grew up in the Lehigh Valley. I learned to drive a car through "shift-change" traffic, and I watched my freinds in high school divide into two camps: those who would work for "the steel" and those who wouldn't. I remember what it was like when someone died in the mills, and I remember what it was like when the Vietnam protestors seemed to insult the very heart of the city. And what I liked about this book were the stories, of one guy, with one career, in the mills, which seemed to speak for many of the people I knew--even though they might have said it differently and even though their stories were a wee bit changed. I found this a treat to read.
