Great Read

This is a great book for anyone interested in learning about the SEAL traininf pipeline as well good portion on Sniper Training. There is little written about actual combat operations except for about two chapters on Desert Shield/Storm. For myself personally I'm not a religious person and frankly didn't care for the authors rather in depth explaination of his spiritual advanture of finding god and the small bits of scripture from the bible you'll find sprinkled about in the book, however taken for what it was it's an overall good read, but short with only 16 chapters.

A Good, Short Biography

Steve Watkins was not always pastor of Kenton Baptist Church as he is today. In 1987, after deciding he was not eager to face four years of college, he decided to join the Navy with a view to being one of the elite Navy Seals. Not lacking in ability or motivation, he did just that and began a successful career in the military. He served in Iraq during the Gulf War but eventually left the Navy to pursue the pastorate. He graduated from the Masters Seminary in Los Angeles and, since then, has been serving Kenton Baptist Church in Kenton, Kentucky. This biography recounts his career in the armed forces and his eventual conversion. It is an enjoyable read, especially for those with an interest in military affairs. Watkins offers an interesting description of his conversion and is careful to ascribe all glory to God.

Outstanding

Steve gives real insight into training - as a Navy SEAL and as a Christian. He served his country as a SEAL and is now serving God as a graduate of The Master's Seminary. Thanks for sharing, Steve.

THE REAL THING!!

Steve Watkins' book is fascinating. I couldn't put it down! Ninety percent of the book goes into great detail regarding the training he received (endured?)to become a certified U.S. Navy SEAL, including "Hell Week," as well as various SEALs missions and the part he and his team played in the Gulf War. Steve is the "real thing" folks! He is very up-front and honest about his salvation experience; however, this book is more about SEALs than Christianity. Actually, I was hoping for more of a balance between the two in the book. Hopefully, he will write another book bringing his readers up-to-date as regards his life after military service. For devotees of Suzanne Brockmann and Dee Henderson U.S. Navy SEALs books, Steve's book is a must-read. Any person who desires to enter the U.S. Navy SEALs program should first read Steve's book to get a complete understanding of the training involved to become a SEAL. I recommend this book highly if you are looking for a "good read."

A Captivating Read!!

Written in an easy to read style, this book will be difficult to put down once you pick it up. Watkins' story begins with his desire to enter the armed services' special forces as a child and continues through the unbelievable challenges and struggles it took to get to the top. The descriptions of the torturous journey through the long period of training and especially of the grueling "hell week" are vivid and thrilling. It is very rare to get a good glimpse into the world of the Navy SEALS and this book offers many insights that are accurate and truthful from an insider's perspective. Watkins was also privileged to have a leading and pivotal role in the start of the Gulf War and offers insights into the difficult and important mission that began the war. The book ends with a compelling, compassionate and truthful presentation of the saving message of the Bible, the truth of Jesus Christ which turned Watkins' life around and gave him meaning and purpose and especially the forgiveness of his sin. Though this book will be enjoyed by everyone who picks it up, it would really be a perfect gift for a young person interested in the military's special forces.
