In the tradition of Studs Terkel's works and Mark Baker's Cops, John Pekkanen, award-winning medical journalist, takes readers into the hearts and minds of the men and women who practice medicine in America today. Extraordinary.--American Health.
I've practiced medicine for 13 years now, and I can tell you that this book is as spot on now as it was when it was printed 20 years ago. It is a little heavier on the darker side than what we're used to seeing from the men and women in white coats. It is a book that gives a little perspective, and reminds us that there is a negative side to most professions, including ones with significant status and compensation (although we have seen that decline over the years too). It is possible to practice medicine and have an enjoyable, fulfilling career. But as this book shows, it can come at a significant price.

As a physician I loved this book when it was released in ~1989 (?) While it has become a bit outdated given the changes in medicine in the past 15 years, it is still an insightful view into the real world of the doctor's mind and experience.
