Book Overview

In the second book of the series, Boxer is pitted against unspeakable evils...his own and the world's.

He's hired by a rich client in LaJolla to track down his runaway daughter. At the same time, Southern California is being terrorized by an elusive serial killer, who remains one step (and one victim) ahead of the police--and the FBI--who never know where he will strike, or when. His crime spree begins in the desert, outside Victorville, and ends...in...

great!

this is clever, well written, engrossing to the end. Steven Mann is keeping the genre alive and kicking! Highly recommended

Boxer Rocks

Mayhem is even better than The Firefly - and that's saying something. Characters and plotting are excellent. So too is Steven Mann's mordant eye for the soulless gentrification of contemporary Los Angeles. If you hate shopping malls, phoney theme restaurants, yuppie bars and what generally passes for thinking in corporate California, then Boxer, the unlicensed PI fuelled on bourbon and pursued by personal demons, is the man for you. Mayhem is fast and violent, with Boxer on the trail of a missing girl and pitted against a drop-dead gorgeous serial-killer. More please, Mr Mann.

Edge of your seat thriller!

I read Mann's first book, "The Firefly," and thought it was great. The second one is even better. Slightly less noir but a LOT darker, "Mayhem" has one of the creepiest serial killers you'll meet in a book and interesting characters throughout. Boxer, the ex-cop, is back and just as tortured as before. What I liked about the book is how real it felt--this is no pretty boy Hollywood detective with a predictable plot and a pat ending. VERY suspenseful. Keep up the great work, Steven Mann!

I dare you to put this book down!

This book grabs you from the get-go. The characters are well realized and the plot twists and turns with surprises without a false move. Imagine a flawed but admirable protagonist that you go with, root for and empathize with. That is Boxer. This is the second of the series and I can't wait to read the next installment. MAYHEM is a work of a confident and captivating storyteller--Mann is a master! What was promised in THE FIREFLY--the first book of this compelling series--has been realized BIG TIME. Move over, James Patterson and all the other poseurs to suspense fiction... this is the real deal. Steven Mann is obviously a writer to be reckoned with. He writes like the edgy product of a shotgun wedding of Thomas Harris and James Ellroy. I guarantee that if you give this book a try, you will not only have a sleepless night or two, but you will become a convert. Highly recommended.
