How does a boy cope when he's excited but frightened? Matthew wants to go camping but so many things about the experience seem scary to him. Pretending his toy rabbit is nervous about these things, Matthew poses questions to his mother on Tall Rabbit's behalf. His mother's loving answers provide Matthew and Tall Rabbit with all the reassurance a boy could need.
My daughter, 2 and a half, loves this book. She didn't know what firflies were. After reading it, we had to stay up after dark and go search for fireflies. She acts out the story in our livingroom-- afraid to go camping, spending the night outside and then discovering the outdoor nightlights. Very sweet. And I like the way Matthew gives voice to his feelings by speaking through his stuffed rabbit.
One of our favorites

My girls (2 and 5) just adore this book. It seems to be the one book that they can agree on when the older one wants a "big girl" book. They both pretend that they are Matthew and that Tall Rabbit is their favorite stuffed animal - and at the end when Matthew is cuddled up with tall rabbit they both say "awww." This is a beautifully written, warm story that you'll come back to again and again.
Warm and beautifully written

A book to return to again and again: Susan Meyer's warm and beautifully written story is brought lovingly to life by Amy Huntington's often humorous illustrations. I hope there will be more stories about Matthew and the long-eared stuffed rabbit who shares his hopes and fears.
Terrific book for kids

I bought this for someone else, but my eight-year-old son found it on the dinner table and devoured it, unbeknownst to his mom and dad. Even though he's at the age when his usual reading is limited to one chapter-book after another, "Matthew and Tall Rabbit Go Camping" captivated him completely. The book has lovely, subtle insights into kids' fears and comforts, and the illustrations -- especially at the end -- are beautiful. This one's a winner!
