This is a classic I first read at about age eight. Then I read it about 12 more times! "Matt Gargan's Boy" is a book about a major leaguer's son coping with his parents' divorce and with the upcoming Little League season. The son, Danny, is the team's top pitcher. He, like most adolescents who see their parents divorce, dreams of reuniting his parents. Things take a turn for the worse when his mom's new boyfriend provides Danny's team with a surprise, his daughter Susie - a female second baseman. Not only is Danny forced to deal with the realization that his parents will never reunite, but he must also deal with having a girl play on his Little League team. And the worst part is that she's good! This story is a lot more about a youngster learning to handle adversity and accept circumstances which are beyond one's control than about baseball.
