Still the Best Book on Teaching Early Math Skills

Mary Baratta-Lorton has done teachers and children a great service in creating this excellent curriculum for Kindergarten Math. Working with children over the years and observing how they think, Baretta-Lorton developed tons of activities that allow children to construct mathematical concepts for themselves. The mathematical explorations use everyday objects and easy to make materials. The reasoning behind each activity is thoroughly explained. Suggestions for classroom management of the activities are provided. Potential issues that may arise are discussed with extensions and alternatives provided. Teacher feedback is included in the current edition. In this age of testing and standards, teachers may rely on rote learning and drill to prepare students for mandatory tests. Unfortunately, this does not prepare them for a future that we cannot even imagine. Teaching children to think about numbers will be more useful in an ever changing world than teaching children to give correct answers to standard questions.
