standard reading practice book

I was looking for a reading comprehension workbook to prepare my third grader for Beestar online reading assessment. This book provides fairly short paragraphs composed at grade 2-3 level. The topics are very kids friendly. It is perfect for your child to practice and get ready for state standard tests. We don't see any challenging words in the text, so your third grader should proceed lesson by lesson without difficulty. The book contains colorful pictures that attract children's attention. My child's Beestar assessment test was slightly harder than this book. But the concepts and skills are the same. Overall it's a fair book serving the purpose.

It's just what we wanted!

We were looking for a book that would provide practice specifically in reading comprehension skills, for a child in second grade who is reading above grade level in most other respects (vocabulary, etc.). This book suits that need very well. We wanted our young student to have some short reading assignments, and to develop the discipline of answering questions *only using information from the text* -- as opposed to answering from personal experience, or guessing, etc. It's not really the same thing as being "smart" and it's not the same thing as understanding the vocabulary. I was glad to see that this book does indeed offer plenty of practice in that skill area, as well as various other activities, as described in the product listing. Another reviewer here has observed that the book does not appear to be truly geared for third grade, despite its title. My guess is that it probably is indeed geared for *some* third graders, considering that kids in this age range have widely-varying skill levels. Still, I'd tend to agree with that reviewer, because our second-grader's teacher had used a few of the pages from this book (or one like it) for homework assignments! I mean, word-for-word, they were the same pages, and these are just regular kids in second grade. Presumably most of them were able to do the homework, but I can't vouch for it. I also haven't had a chance to find out if the teacher was using this same book, or another one from the same publisher, or what. It would not surprise me if an educational publisher reprints the same thing in different products, geared toward supposedly different markets. The contents are not great literature, and I have small quibbles with the quality and precision of a few things here and there. But overall I'm happy with the purchase. I wouldn't want to rely on it for a child's entire education, but I don't think that's its purpose. It is a useful tool for extra enrichment for kids somewhere in this general age range (6 at the very lowest to 9 at the highest, I'd guess).
