The second volume of the story of Marwayne continues the story of Agnes Marfleet with the challenges of her life with Fred, and the arrival of their five children. This includes her experiences with teaching the children of the rural community, learning to handle the threshing crews, raising chickens, and capturing pigs for market. They take over the operation of the post office, and manage a small convenience store. The community evolves around them with the construction of roads, the advent of the railroad, a new telephone system, and formation of the town. In the end they leave the farm, and move into a new house in town.
