"Marge's Diner" fits us fine and definitely wears well (it was published in 1989). Customers range up and down the ladder of success and more importantly, the foods aren't the kind that alot of kids find daunting. Bright colors welcome readers who will want to experience this 'culture' if they have been deprived previously. Reviewer mcHAIKU is fond of the Oakes' Construction Co.'s sweatjackets and the waitresses' snazzy caps, shown by author-artist Gail Gibbons in all their nostalgic glory. PLUS . . there is the suggestion that the story might be taking place in Fairlee, Vermont, where long ago I was a camp counselor. Here's hoping that DINERS continue to have a certain allure for children. They will also find "Two Eggs, Please" an amusing story about a Diner & a Rhino - - for young ones who are Zoo lovers & perhaps will grow to be more adventurous when ordering breakfast (WHAT! no deviled eggs?). Later, they will graduate to the great story "Hope Was Here" - Newbery Honor book by Joan Bauer (isbn #0142404241), and will feel quite comfortable in that Diner, experiencing grown-up feelings of community responsibility.
