Mar volume 9 takes up with the last battle of the Fourth Round of the War Games as Dorothy takes on the psychotic Rapunzel, who killed most of her teammates in the last installment because she wouldn't accept their failures. When the battle is done, the Mar team is given a brief respite, and during that time, Dorothy asks the team to accompany her back to her homeland of Kardia, a kingdom of magic and the source of all the Arms in Mar Heaven. There she will tell them about the mysterious woman who appears to be the Queen of the Chess Pieces and why she has been assigned to kill her personally. I love this series, and Volume 9 was especially good because it took a break from the War Games and dealt with the background of Dorothy, who, while seeming to be a cute little girl, actually can let loose with deadly power when she wants. A lot of information and secrets are revealed in this book that will answer some unanswered questions, but we still don't know who the "King" of the Chess Pieces is, even though I'm starting to have my suspicions. All the fights in Mar have an importance to the reader in the sense that if the heroes lose, it won't be just their pride that will be hurt. Instead, the world of Mar Heaven will be destroyed by the evil of the Chess Pieces.
