A Little Red Jewel

For some reason, I thought this book was non-fiction. It turned out to be actually a novel...and quite an interesting one at that. The author, James Riddell was a champion British skier, and a writer of children's books. This is not a children's book, however. This book is an adult book on reincarnation. The protagonist of it, Charles Jackman, is an arrogant, highly prejudice, rich young British man. At times, he is a shallow jerk, but not all the time, and he does have his good points. His military career during WWII reflects the author's in location--Jerusalem and Syria. It is during the war, Charles Jackman again meets up with a man he once heard speak during a metaphysical meeting back home in England. This man, Bernard Corner, would change the life of the protagonist, as well as the lives of many others. It is actually a bit hard to describe this novel. I found it fascinating at times, and always wondered which way it was going to go. At times, I felt like I had read parts of it before, but that is unlikely, since I rarely read fiction reincarnation books. The book was originally published in 1953, but many of the metaphysical topics sound like the current metaphysical topics one reads about today--past lives, karma, dreams, astral travel, soul mates, etc. I guess the best way to describe this novel is, in many ways, it is a little jewel of a metaphysical book!
