Over forty professionals share effective strategies and current issues relating to a K-12 developmental school counseling program. Dozens of practical, easy-to-use forms, ideas, and management concepts are provided for duplication. Brief counseling, group strategies that work, and suggestions for working with special populations are followed by the counselor's role as a consultant and coordinator, family counseling, appraisal, career development, teacher-advisor programs, peer helping, parent involvement, public relations, accountability, ethical issues, and credentialing. Each chapter has been updated, including current program standards and credentialing requirements. This book is designed as a graduate text or as a resource for practicing counselors desiring to be more effective with the developmental approach and who want to better understand the current issues facing them.
I bought this book for class and it is pretty helpful. It is all about solution focused counseling which is helpful in some situations but obviously can't be used all the time. Well written, with examples of dialogue.
A counselor educator and guidance director speaks

I have used this book for teaching my graduate course for school counselors for the past five years. I find the new second edition even more wonderful than the first. It gives students a really accurate picture of what it's like to be a school guidance counselor. It covers so many topics, gives practical suggestions and background information, and does not use jargon. My students love it and it greatly contributes to the success of my course.

This excellent resource lays out a comprehensive program based on the expertise of 30 professionals--presenting needed theory, but focusing mainly on day-to-day operations and ideas that get results. This guide covers program implementation, counselor roles, individual, small, and large group counseling, working with special populations, the counselor as consultant/coordinator, involving other professionals in the counseling process, accountabilities, and legal issues. The guide also includes many reproducible forms.
