Excellent material, a bit dated

I recently purchased this book so that I could get up to speed on switched networks and how they operate. I'm moderately familiar with computer networking in general, but I had never taken the time to get a full grasp of how switches play their role.Though one might glean otherwise from the title, Mr. Black discusses techniques appropriate for old hub-based networks rather than just switched networks. He does a fine job of explaining management techniques and tools, though if you're not familiar with SNMP, things can get a little confusing early on (with the discussion of MIBs and such). The discussion of various physical topologies/mediums and WAN systems are a nice touch and broaden the function of the book. I especially valued his emphasis on being constantly proactive when monitoring your networks (i.e. baselining).Overall, this is an excellent reference that is well written and quite educational. I recommend this especially for those just starting out, no matter how dated it has become (written when Fast Ethernet was just starting to come to the desktop).

This is one of the better books I have read about managing a LAN. It goes into SNMP, RMON (II) and setup of a switched LAN. I would recommend this book to both new administrators and veterens
