good for beginning textbook for students in software engineering and information systems

I tried to use this book as a textbook for an introductory course in Information systems I taught this semester. At our University this course is just the first one in a series that leads towards an BSc in Informatics -- Information Systems. Before taking this course in the 3rd year, students are already rich with programming experience in at least 3 other courses, have already learnt object-oriented programming, algorithms, architecture, networks, databases, web technologies etc. So, in my point of view this book is pretty good for students that are already learning programming and software engineering in other courses and from other books and when they don't have a clue in what ways the big enterprises can get a value from their programming efforts. It is especially good when you are trying to explain that information systems strategy and politics is just as and even more important for the success than the perfect piece of software they created. The book is full with real-world examples of both success and failure of information systems practice in companies like Daimler-Chrysler, Procter and Gamble, MNG, Coca-cola, etc ... The students found that the examples were rather interesting and maybe the best part of this book. It is rather easy to read ... it took me in total 4-5 hours of reading per chapter until fully understanding all of it.

a great overview

This book gives a wide range of information in different area in information system. the good thing is that it include example from life where the person can understand the topic. may some time include extra information that the begginner doesn't need, but overall the book is great. I recommend it for people who do'n't have any backgroud in IT

An outstanding learning resource

This book uses every educational technique known to man-kind: there are real-life applications, how-to, Q & A, web-based study guides and so one. The book is written in a logical, rational format that is interesting as well as informative. There are concept questions and answers at the end of each chapter to ensure the reader "gets" it. If you do not learn info systems at the beginner and intermediate level with this book, your are brain-dead. The person who panned this book is an intellectual snob, not a student.

A book for all levels

"Management Information Systems" provides an adequate general knowledge of the theme, a blend between technical/SW development knowledge and general managerial experience. It is very easy to read thanks to a nice predicable divition and layout.Cases are quite good and summons up every chapter. Cases are showing examples from different countries and cultures. The books' major strength is that it is understandable for readers with all types of background. This is also quite boring, because the authors are using a lot of words to explain quite basic facts known by 90% of the readers from the "real world".

The best for teaching

This is the second time I plan to teach with Laudon & Laudon, and suppose I'll do it again in the future. It's a luxury to have one book so much oriented to teaching, but teaching right now, in the XXI century, using multimedia and e-learning. I have never found such a quantity of references, business cases and the like. Well structured, well organized and very well presented. Leading-edge topics are also included, so it's a real updated material.I'm living in Spain, so my comments need to be interpreted from this perspective. I plan to use this material in an MBA, and I'm sure my students will be delighted with this selection. This is not the book of an author, this is the result of the work of tenths of people working together to produce such an useful material. What I most appreciate is the structure of the chapters, the richness of Case Studies and the use of both multimedia and Internet. With all this in mind I can hardly understand how one can give only 3 stars instead of 5.
