Excellent Doctrine, Needs Application

Batya Wooten shows by scholarly exegesis and study the true, biblical roles of women (and incidentally, men). The book advocates an Hebraic and contextual approach to the Scriptures. When you get down to the "nitty gritty" of the Scriptures, women were not created to be lesser servants, a little higher than the animals. This book is empowering to women and in a christian world of "hush up and submit or everything is your fault", it is a breath of well-balanced fresh air. Men do need women. It is the easy way out for a woman to follow follow follow, submit submit submit. Women need to speak up, but be RESPECTFUL ALWAYS. At the heart of all women is the desire for a peaceful home and harmonious relationship, and it tears us up when hubby is displeased with us. Therefore, it is a courageous and sacrificing woman who loves her husband enough to respectfully and righteously oppose him, knowing he may react very badly. The problem is that women don't know how to do this in a non or at least less-confrontational way, myself included. Therefore, a man cannot perceive that a woman is genuinely torn apart by an inner struggle about whether or not to oppose him, and he cannot see that she means well and wants the best for everyone. My favorite part of the book is this, after giving a scenario of a woman having an intuitive bad feeling about someone: "Should the husband refuse to do business with the man based soley on his wife's input? Probably not. Instead, he needs to filter her input through his logical mind, take the matter to the Lord in prayer, and then make his decision." That's pretty much the best balance I've ever read. If husbands responded to womanly input this way, women would be happy with just being heard and knowing what they say matters and is weighed in. Too often, a man's ego simply dismisses her and a fight to be heard ensues. Again, men often shut down our opinions however because of how it is delivered. I did not give this book five stars because, while the Batya wonderfully explains what our roll is and how she arrived at it through Scripture, it does not cover very much "how-to". For example, the book doesn't specifically talk about how to "oppose" your husband, what words to use, ect, in a way that doesn't make him feel attacked or usurped. She did mention that women needed to be respectful always, but the book could have used much more emphasis, perhaps a whole chapter, on that point alone. Be warned Christians, this book is unashamedly PRO-TORAH (like me!)! =)
