Ruby's first attempt at a devil doll book!

This was Ms. Jensen's first book. That is, for the Zebra publishing company. The one that spawned a legacy of horror novels, along with four other devil doll boks.Elsea moves her three children into her grandmother's old house after her husband dies a painful death of leukemia. Hopefully, this would be a nice place to patch up holes in the family. After all, the kids should have alot of fun. There's a creek to fish in, mountails to climb and a huge attic for five-year-old Dorrie to play in. On the surface, everything seems idyllic...The toys have waited for years for someone to come and set them free from the dusty old attic. They need a mother to take care of their disintegrating bodies and someone to play with them. Little Dorrie seems like the perfect person to do all these things. The toys will make her their new mama...This book is mistaken for a "devil doll" book, when really it's a "devil TOY" book. The synopsis on the cover is very vague with what the story's really about. The atmosphere in the book is definately captivating. It makes you feel like you are the one wandering the halls of the old, dusty house. Also, there are some creepy moments. When little Dorrie whishes the toys to life, they don't become her playmates but evil little beings that roam the attic by night. They are also prepared to defend their domain. Anyone who even thinks of disturbing THEIR house will have a price to pay...At 303 pages, this book is a quick read. It's definitely hard to put down. It captivates you and then glues you to the pages. Even though this isn't one of Ms. Jensen's best books, it's far from her worst. It doesn't really go into depth about why Dorrie has the power to bring the toys to life. I think that the deaths, which are few, could have been a little more gruesome. There's a whole scene in the book that involves a razor sharp hatchet, but it doesn't once swing into a human stump and gush blood and other bodily fluids. Also, I got a little anoyed with some of the charactors. The little girl, Dorrie, is a spoiled little brat and there were times that I wanted to go into the story and just smack her across her perfect, rosy face!Overall, this was a good effort for a "debut" horror novel. It certainly has some eerie moments and it definitely isn't bad, so check it out. You might be hooked on Ruby Jean Jensen...forever!

Antique toys , not something to be messed with!

This story is about a little girl named Dorrie who moves into an old victorian house with her family after her father dies. She soon discovers the attic which is full of her great-grandmothers' old toys, and one day when she innoccently wishes them to life, it becomes so.However, I won't say how she makes them come to life. There is one toy, a celluid doll that is basically the main character in the attic. This is where the story gets really creepy. When the doll comes to life it gets so creepy! The toys are Dorrie's best friends until one day the family decides to move and the toys don't like it too much and do something bad to the man who comes to look at the house. It here when the toys begin to turn on everyone in the story. However Dorrie does something to end this maddness once and for all. This book was great! It was so creepy! It kept me turning the pages. This is one of Jensens' better books.
