Yo, this book is very, very good. I gotta give props to Vy Higginson and Tonya Bolden, the authors. First the story starts off with a singer named Doris Winter visiting her church Mt. Calvary Full Gospel Church. Then the story takes you to Part One, "This Little Light of Mine." In that part it tells of her youth years, ages 11-12 during the the 40s. It tells of how she first got in the choir and how excited she was about singing on the Sunday of Communion. The day before Doris sings on Sunday, her father tells her to always follow her dream to sing. When that day finally comes her father, the minister of the church, dies of a heart attack while preaching his sermon. Doris becomes very depressed after her father's death and starts drifting away from her singing. Then one day at her friend Toni's house, there is a party with aspiring singers, photographers, actors, and many more people. There, Toni's mother asks Doris to sing for their guests, and after that experience, Doris finally decides she wants to become a singer. Then the story comes to Part Two, "Travelin' Shoes" and tells of her adolescent years. One summer, Doris visits West Point, Virginia where her mother's family stays. Doris gets piano lessons from her cousin's friend Micheal and they become very close. Then Doris returns back to Harlem and tells her friends about everything. Later, when she is older, Doris gets a job babysitting. One night her friend Berry offers Doris a chance to usher at the famous Apollo Theatre. Doris figures this is a way she can get close to stardom, well at least meeting some starts, and of course she takes this offer up. Doris continues to usher and the theatre and later on gets caught by her mother and is punished. Later on, Doris decides to enter a talent contest at Apollo along with her three friends Berry, Gail, and Deedee. They win and are offered a record deal. Now I would LOVE to continue but to get a better taste of this story you all have to check this book out! I recommend this to any and everybody, especially if you want to become a singer just like Doris.

This book is called Mama I Want to Sing. The characters are African Americans and it?s not a big issue in the story. The book takes place in New York. This story was happening during the Second World War. She really wasn?t really wasn?t prejudice against. Doris? father is a preacher of the church where she used to sing. She sang with the adult choirs when she was eleven. Doris and her friends try to become famous but it isn?t as easy they thought. Does she become famous? I really liked the book because Doris loves to sing and she didn?t give up her dreams after she could become famous and she didn?t give up. I really think that this book is good it is a good book to read. Read the story to find out what happens at the end of the story.

It is not the kind of book I would read on a day to day base, but the author did a good job writing the book. The book Mama I want to sing had a fun plot line that was very differrent then any thing I read before so it made it fun to read. It was very differrnt then what you would think by reading the back of the book.It was about a little girl that had a great voice . When she was little her dad died but be for he did he told her to follow her dreams and that is what she did.Doris made music with her friends. Then they performed at the Apollo theatre but a will not say any more because I do not want to tell the whole story. The authors Vy Higginsen and Tonya Bolden wrote the book based on Higginsens musical Mama I want to sing.Ms.higginsen's sister Tonya Bolden inspired the musical.Tonya was a singer and composerin the 1960s. I think if you like books with fun and different plot lines then this is the book for you . This book is also about family and friends. If you read this book I hope you like it.
